Spring 2020 Owlcrate TBR

Anyone else guilty of having a massive backlog of books from subscription boxes?

Being a mood reader is hard sometimes; there’s books I really really want to read but I’m either not in the mood for them or I start them and don’t finish them. The Cruel Prince being one of these titles. I feel like I’m missing out by not having read this title yet but I’ve tried over the years and I just keep putting it back down! I even got an ARC for it and ugh. I’m really hoping to finish it this year! Mood or not!

October Reading Challenge 2018

IMG_9703

It’s that time of the year again where I do my October Reading Challenge — of the 9 years I’ve done this, I’ve never fully completed my list. But that’s okay cause that’s half the fun, right?!

I’m pretty sure I won’t read all the books on my list this year lol since I’ve clearly been struggling with reading. Lort.

But we are definitely going to try!

The Beast Is an Animal by Paternelle van Arsdale

A girl with a secret talent must save her village from the encroaching darkness in this haunting and deeply satisfying tale.

Alys was seven when the soul eaters came to her village.

These soul eaters, twin sisters who were abandoned by their father and slowly morphed into something not quite human, devour human souls. Alys, and all the other children, were spared—and they were sent to live in a neighboring village. There the devout people created a strict world where good and evil are as fundamental as the nursery rhymes children sing. Fear of the soul eaters—and of the Beast they believe guides them—rule village life. But the Beast is not what they think it is. And neither is Alys.

Inside, Alys feels connected to the soul eaters, and maybe even to the Beast itself. As she grows from a child to a teenager, she longs for the freedom of the forest. And she has a gift she can tell no one, for fear they will call her a witch. When disaster strikes, Alys finds herself on a journey to heal herself and her world. A journey that will take her through the darkest parts of the forest, where danger threatens her from the outside—and from within her own heart and soul.

This is actually a book I spotted at B&N last year thinking it was a retelling of Beauty and the Beast… but it’s not. I’m actually currently reading this one right now and it’s kinda… weird. The beginning part was really interesting, though I have a few questions. But we’ll see how it goes the farther I get into the story.

City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab

Ever since Cass almost drowned (okay, she did drown, but she doesn’t like to think about it), she can pull back the Veil that separates the living from the dead . . . and enter the world of spirits. Her best friend is even a ghost.

So things are already pretty strange. But they’re about to get much stranger.

When Cass’s parents start hosting a TV show about the world’s most haunted places, the family heads off to Edinburgh, Scotland. Here, graveyards, castles, and secret passageways teem with restless phantoms. And when Cass meets a girl who shares her “gift,” she realizes how much she still has to learn about the Veil — and herself.

And she’ll have to learn fast. The city of ghosts is more dangerous than she ever imagined.

NYT bestselling author Victoria Schwab delivers a thrillingly spooky and action-packed tale of hauntings, history, mystery, and the bond between friends (even if that friend is a ghost . . .).

This is one I randomly stumbled on while scrolling through Twitter. I had no idea it was being released… I’ve been a little out of touch with new releases. But I thought the cover was really cute (I’m a sucker for cats on covers) and it sounded super interesting! I’ve actually never read anything by Schawb (I KNOW)! So I’m pretty excited to dive into this one!

Stalking Jack The Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco

Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord’s daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life.

Against her stern father’s wishes and society’s expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle’s laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world.

This is one that’s been on and off on my TBR, I’m such a wuss when it comes to scary reads even though I really enjoy them. But since I live alone 80% of the time now, I’d rather not lol! I hear this one isn’t as scary as it is more gorey. I can handle gore in writing a lot better than in a movie, that’s for sure. So I’m kinda excited to start this one (I love the covers to this series) but I’m also kinda like…. *pokes it with a stick*.

RoseBlood by A.G. Howard

In this modern day spin on Leroux’s gothic tale of unrequited love turned to madness, seventeen-year-old Rune Germain has a mysterious affliction linked to her operatic talent, and a horrifying mistake she’s trying to hide. Hoping creative direction will help her, Rune’s mother sends her to a French arts conservatory for her senior year, located in an opera house rumored to have ties to The Phantom of the Opera.

At RoseBlood, Rune secretly befriends the masked Thorn—an elusive violinist who not only guides her musical transformation through dreams that seem more real than reality itself, but somehow knows who she is behind her own masks. As the two discover an otherworldly connection and a soul-deep romance blossoms, Thorn’s dark agenda comes to light and he’s forced to make a deadly choice: lead Rune to her destruction, or face the wrath of the phantom who has haunted the opera house for a century, and is the only father he’s ever known.

I read Splitered years ago and loved it! But I never went on to finish the rest of the series. I do plan to though, especially since Howard is coming out with a new title early next year that I’m pretty excited about. I don’t know much about Phantom of the Opera, like at all. But this title has been on my TBR since last year and I should probably get around to it soon!

Stolen Enchantress by Amber Argyle

Any girl who goes into the Forbidden Forest never comes out again. Except the one who did.
Larkin should have been watching her little sister, should have paid more attention to the trees looming over her family’s fields. Now Sela is gone. Knowing full well the danger of the forest and its beast, Larkin goes after her anyway. With her sister clutched in her arms, she manages to escape, but not before discovering the truth lurking beneath the wicked boughs.

She may have evaded the beast once, but with the full force of his magic now fixated on her, she isn’t sure how much longer she can resist.

This is an indie title I stumbled on while browsing Amazon and I fell in love with the cover! Look how prettyyy! Retellings are my fav and I can never get enough of them! I especially enjoy retelling mashups the most! I don’t know much about The Piper, I was reading a graphic novel retelling a while ago but my loan expired before I could finish it. I think I get the general concept? Maybe? But this mashup sounds super interesting.

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

Jude was seven when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.

As Jude becomes more deeply embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, she discovers her own capacity for trickery and bloodshed. But as betrayal threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

This title has been on my TBR for FAR TOO LONG! I’ve picked it up a handful of times just to put it back down! I don’t really know why; it’s not like it’s boring at all. I guess I just wasn’t in much of faerie mood at the time. I’m itching to finish this book as I’ve heard so many good things about it! I also have yet to read anything by Holly Black!

Wicked Like a Wildfire by Lana Popovic

All the women in Iris and Malina’s family have the unique magical ability or “gleam” to manipulate beauty. Iris sees flowers as fractals and turns her kaleidoscope visions into glasswork, while Malina interprets moods as music. But their mother has strict rules to keep their gifts a secret, even in their secluded sea-side town. Iris and Malina are not allowed to share their magic with anyone, and above all, they are forbidden from falling in love.

But when their mother is mysteriously attacked, the sisters will have to unearth the truth behind the quiet lives their mother has built for them. They will discover a wicked curse that haunts their family line—but will they find that the very magic that bonds them together is destined to tear them apart forever?

This is a title I was exposed to since it was in one of my Owlcrate boxes. I hadn’t heard of it before that but it sounded really interesting. The box also came with a packet of flower seeds! It was really cutely themed! The concept of this title is interesting — the idea that they’re forbidden to fall in love!

Sea Witch by Sarah Henning

Everyone knows what happens in the end. A mermaid, a prince, a true love’s kiss. But before that young siren’s tale, there were three friends. One feared, one royal, and one already dead.

Ever since her best friend, Anna, drowned, Evie has been an outcast in her small fishing town. A freak. A curse. A witch.

A girl with an uncanny resemblance to Anna appears offshore and, though the girl denies it, Evie is convinced that her best friend actually survived. That her own magic wasn’t so powerless after all. And, as the two girls catch the eyes—and hearts—of two charming princes, Evie believes that she might finally have a chance at her own happily ever after.

But her new friend has secrets of her own. She can’t stay in Havnestad, or on two legs, unless Evie finds a way to help her. Now Evie will do anything to save her friend’s humanity, along with her prince’s heart—harnessing the power of her magic, her ocean, and her love until she discovers, too late, the truth of her bargain.

One other kind of retelling I really enjoy are villain retellings! I’m more of a villain girl than a princess girl, always have been and always will be! While The Little Mermaid is one of my least favorite tale’s I always found Ursula to be a pretty interesting character in general. I recently just finished All The Ever Afters which was a retelling of Cinderella’s evil step mother; it wasn’t what I thought it would be and it was pretty slow paced but I enjoyed it… mostly. Hoping this one will be a bit more fast paced!

~*~

While there are more titles I’d like to add I think I’ll stop here. If I end up picking up another title besides what’s on this list, I’ll add it in since I’m more of a mood reader; but I’m hoping to get to these titles before I do!

What’s on your Halloween/October TBR?

BOOKS I PLAN ON READING IN 2018

There are a few other books I want to read and that I have listed in my Goodreads TBR which you can find [ HERE ] and the list is always growing and changing as I discover more books. And there’s a few other books I want to re-read and finish the series to. Maybe I’ll do another video/post on those specifically.

Also if you want to see the video I did for this post you can find that [ HERE ].

Pop by, leave a comment! Help a girl out with some views! I’m trying to get back into the habit of filming but it’s just… ugh. It’s always been much easier to blog for me than to make a video. Though they’re fun to watch and if I think of a great one to film I usually am excited to. It’s just finding great topics to talk about! Hopefully as I read more I’ll come up with more topics.

What are some books you’re looking forward to reading this year? Is there anything on your re-read list?

October 2017 Reading Challenge

IMG_0380

Over the last few years I’ve set a reading challenge for myself in October — sometimes this extends to September or December but it’s always always been in October. I dedicate this month to read all the “scarier” books I pushed off the rest of the year. And normally I would look forward to this challenge but this year I live alone so reading scary books is a bit of MORE than JUST a challenge for me, especially with my anxiety acting up and making me see things that aren’t there (which it tends to do when I get really stressed out — I just cant figure out the trigger for it this time and it’s driving me nuts).

If you’d like to see the covers to the books I’m mentioning you can check out my Amazon list of it [ H E R E ] as I’m too lazy to figure out a format for these book covers in this entry though I would love to do it, if I could figure it out. Perhaps I’ll edit this entry later and play around with that. Or not. Who knows. But for now you get just a basic list.

Any titles I come across to add to the list that isn’t on this list can be found on the Amazon list. In addition I have 2 1/2 re-reads I try to do every year of my 2 favorite passed challenge reads!

Again, to see the covers click ⇢ H E R E.

⇢ The Girl at Midnight by Melissa Grey
⇢ And I Darken by Kiersten White

⇢ The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco
⇢ The Shadow Society by Marie Rutkoski
⇢ Roseblood by A.G. Howard
⇢ Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgans
⇢ Frostblood by Elly Blake
⇢ Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
⇢ Haunted by Alexandra Adornetto
⇢ The Beast Is an Animal by Peternelle van Arsdale
⇢ Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
⇢ Wicked Like a Wildfire by Lana Popovic
